January 23, 2026

The proposed Avadi–Sriperumbudur–Guduvancheri new railway line project in Tamil Nadu aims to connect Chennai's western and southern suburbs, significantly improving regional connectivity. A detailed project report (DPR) for this line has been prepared, with the project gaining traction as of late 2025 to enhance transport options.

Key details of the proposed Avadi–Sriperumbudur–Guduvancheri new railway line project include:

Route: Connects Avadi with Guduvancheri, passing through industrial hubs like Sriperumbudur.

Purpose: Aims to reduce congestion in Chennai city and provide a direct link between the Chennai-Arakkonam (West) and Chennai-Chengalpattu (South) railway lines.

Status: As of September 2025, the DPR was prepared, indicating progress in planning.

Impact: Expected to boost economic growth in the corridor and facilitate easier commutes for residents and workers in the suburban areas.

Project Overview & Status

Current Status: The DPR is ready and was cleared by Southern Railway in late 2025.

Estimated Cost: Approximately ₹3,316 crore for the entire 58 km stretch.

Phase I: Covers 33.78 km from Guduvanchery to Sriperumbudur (including a spur to Irungattukottai) at an estimated cost of ₹945 crore.

Design Speed: Trains are expected to operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/hour.

Land Acquisition: Requires roughly 229 to 300 acres, including significant private and forest land.

Proposed Stations:The line is planned to feature 10 to 11 stations, connecting major industrial and residential hubs:

  • Avadi
  • Vayalanallur
  • Thirumazhisai
  • Thandalam

Key Benefits
Industrial Connectivity:
Provides direct rail access to the massive industrial corridors of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, benefiting both workers and freight movement.

Airport Link: The line will be situated approximately 45 minutes from the proposed Parandur Second Airport, facilitating better transit for future air passengers.

Commuter Relief: Offers an alternative to heavily congested road routes like the Outer Ring Road and helps link the western and southern suburban rail lines.

A DPR for Guduvanchery – Sriperumbadur – Irugattukottai (phase I) is now ready.

The DPR says that the completion period of the project is three years. The Southern Railway (SR) has awarded the work of DPR ‘Avadi — Sriperumbudur — Guduvanchery with a spur line from Sriperumbudur — Irunkatukottai.
